Bosnia and Herzegovina sees surge in thermal and renewable power generation in October 2025 despite lower hydropower output

According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, gross electricity production in the country reached 1,232 GWh in October 2025, compared to 1,142 GWh in the same month last year. Hydropower plants accounted for 24.2% of total output, while thermal power plants dominated with 66.5%, and solar and wind power plants contributed 9.3%.

Net production of hydropower plants stood at 296 GWh, which represents a 25% decrease compared to October 2024. In contrast, thermal power generation rose sharply to 752 GWh, marking a 19.9% year-on-year increase, while electricity production from renewable sources (wind and solar) jumped to 115 GWh, recording a remarkable 150% growth.

During the same month, electricity imports declined by 31% to 300 GWh, down from 435 GWh a year earlier, while exports also fell by 16.6% to 487 GWh compared to 584 GWh in October 2024.

In the fuel sector, production of lignite increased by 4.8% to 650,000 tons, while brown coal output rose by 2% to 569,000 tons. At the same time, natural gas imports amounted to 20.8 million cubic meters, which is a 26% increase compared to 16.51 million cubic meters imported in October last year.
