Bulgaria: KEVR approves 3.3% drop in wholesale gas price for January 2026

The Bulgarian Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (KEVR) has approved a 3.3% decrease in the wholesale natural gas price for January 2026, in line with the proposal by public supplier Bulgargaz in mid-December. The wholesale price now stands at around 31.2 euros/MWh, excluding VAT and excise duties. Previously, KEVR had approved a 4.3% reduction for December.

The January supply structure relies heavily on Azerbaijani gas delivered via the Bulgaria-Greece interconnector under the existing long-term agreement, which covers a significant portion of domestic demand and helps keep prices competitive. In addition, Bulgargaz has arranged LNG deliveries for January through agreements with traders awarded via tender, ensuring favorable delivery pricing and payment terms.

The supply mix is further supported by withdrawals from the Chiren underground gas storage facility, enabling Bulgargaz to fully meet its obligations to retail suppliers, district heating operators, and industrial clients under bilateral contracts. With volumes for the entire winter already secured, and assuming regional demand remains stable, gas prices are expected to stay close to current levels, ensuring price stability for Bulgarian consumers.
