Croatia: Krk LNG terminal emerges as regional gas hub after major capacity upgrade

Over the past five years, the LNG terminal in Omišalj on the island of Krk has become a key pillar of gas supply security for Croatia and the wider region. Since entering operation, the facility has handled 18.8 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, delivering more than 11.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas into Croatia’s transmission system.

Operational figures show that 133 LNG carriers have docked at the terminal so far, with their cargoes transferred into 545 LNG trucks. Since the start of commercial operations, the Krk terminal has supplied over 60% of all gas entering Croatia’s transport network, highlighting its strategic role in the country’s energy architecture.

A major milestone was recently reached with the upgrade of the floating storage and regasification unit LNG Croatia. The vessel was sent to a shipyard in Turkey, where a new regasification module was installed before it returned to Omišalj and resumed service at the berth.

Following the upgrade, the terminal’s annual regasification capacity increased from 3.9 to 6.1 billion cubic meters. According to operator LNG Hrvatska, the expansion significantly strengthens supply reliability for Croatia and neighbouring markets, which increasingly depend on Krk as a critical alternative entry point for natural gas imports.
