Serbia: Vojvodina expands biogas capacity with new 1 MW plant in Plandiste

The development of biogas electricity generation in Vojvodina is gaining further momentum, as newly issued permits indicate additional capacity coming online this year. In the municipality of Plandiste, local authorities have approved the initial construction stages of a biogas power plant with an installed capacity of 1 MW, highlighting the area’s growing importance in renewable energy.

The project will be implemented by local company Alter Biogas Plan, following approval from the municipal department responsible for urban planning, construction, environmental protection, communal affairs, and agriculture. The facility is classified under category G and is designed for an output of 999 kW. Construction is planned in two phases. The first stage includes building the core technological infrastructure, such as two primary fermenters, a mixing pit, pumping facilities, a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, a step-up transformer container, and auxiliary elements.

The second stage foresees further expansion, with the addition of two more fermenters, an additional mixing pit, a second CHP unit, and a separate step-up transformer installation. Together, these components will complete the biogas facility and enable stable electricity production at full capacity.

Plandiste’s emergence as a focal point for biogas investments was already evident in late 2024, when an urban planning proposal outlined the potential construction of up to 20 independent biogas plants in the area, each rated at 999 kW. This plan signals a long-term vision for clustering agricultural-based energy projects in the municipality.

The new plant is intended to supply electricity directly to the network, while the heat generated during the process will be reused internally. Biogas production will rely primarily on agricultural feedstock, including corn silage, rye silage, and ground corn, further linking renewable energy expansion with local farming activity in Vojvodina.
