Bulgaria: Power output falls as consumption rises, boosting imports in early 2026

According to data published by Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria declined by 2.45% year-on-year in the period from 1 January to 18 January 2026, reaching a total of 2.37 TWh. Over the same period, electricity consumption increased by 4.18%, amounting to 2.52 TWh, resulting in net electricity imports of 156 GWh in early 2026.

Output from baseload power plants, including coal-fired and nuclear facilities, totaled 1.76 TWh, marking a 15.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. This decline significantly contributed to the overall reduction in domestic electricity generation.

At the same time, electricity production from renewable energy sources (RES) recorded strong growth. Generation from RES connected to the transmission network rose by 48.33% to 172.2 GWh, while RES output in the distribution network increased by 14.37%, reaching 145.6 GWh, highlighting the continued expansion of renewables in Bulgaria’s power mix.
