In the scenic municipality of Përmet, Albania, local residents are taking the lead in shaping their energy future. The Përmet Renewable Energy Community (REC) is a pioneering initiative demonstrating how citizens can collaboratively produce, manage, and benefit from renewable energy, while fostering local engagement, sustainability, and resilience. The community’s early achievements include solar photovoltaic (PV) installations on public buildings, such as schools and kindergartens, with a combined capacity of around 100 kWp locally. Funded by the Government of Japan and implemented via UNDP, these systems reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and provide clean electricity for municipal staff, students, and residents. The Përmet REC is built on a clear and participatory governance model: Citizens / Community → General Assembly → Board → Managerial Team.
