The subsidiary company Hidroelektrane na Drini, part of Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS), has initiated a public procurement process aimed at extending the operational lifespan and improving the efficiency of the Višegrad hydropower plant. The focus of the procurement is the development of a conceptual design and a feasibility study, with an estimated contract value of approximately 750,000 euros, not including value-added tax.
The project involves the creation of a detailed conceptual design for the reconstruction of the plant, along with a feasibility study related to the acquisition and installation of new electrical and mechanical equipment. It also includes the preparation of technical documentation required for the construction work necessary to implement the project. The contract will be awarded based on the lowest bid submitted.
The Višegrad hydropower plant, located on the Drina River just upstream from the town of Višegrad, has been producing electricity since 1989. Built as a riverside facility, it features a gravity concrete dam and a machine building situated on the left riverbank. After 35 years of continuous operation, the plant is due for significant modernization to ensure continued safe and reliable performance. In 2023, Energoprojekt – Hidroinženjering completed a general reconstruction project and feasibility study. The newly launched procurement represents the next step, involving a more detailed elaboration of proposed solutions.
The modernization effort is divided into two phases. Phase one includes the development of the conceptual design, which must be completed within eight months following contract signing. This will be followed by a 30-day period for alignment with requirements and formal approval. Phase two will focus on preparing the feasibility study, to be completed within three months of the conceptual design’s approval, along with an additional 20 days for technical alignment and confirmation by the contracting authority.
The selected contractor will also be responsible for providing expert support during the drafting of technical documentation for future tenders related to equipment procurement and construction execution. The ultimate objective of the project is to increase the plant’s installed capacity and improve energy efficiency, thereby supporting long-term operational safety and performance.
By addressing equipment rehabilitation, replacement, and all associated construction interventions, this investment represents a critical advancement in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy infrastructure. It supports the country’s commitment to sustainably harnessing its domestic hydropower potential.
