According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), gross electricity production in the country reached 1,494 GWh in March 2025, up from 1,351 GWh recorded in the same month last year.
Hydropower plants contributed 37.4 percent of total gross production, thermal power plants accounted for 55.5 percent, while solar and wind power plants made up 7.1 percent. Despite the overall growth, net electricity production from hydropower plants fell by 7.7 percent, totaling 555 GWh in March 2025 compared to the previous year. In contrast, thermal electricity production increased significantly, reaching 740 GWh, which is 20.5 percent higher than March 2024.
Electricity production from renewable sources, including wind and solar, surged by 71 percent year-on-year, reaching 106 GWh. At the same time, electricity imports declined by 12.8 percent to 327 GWh, while exports grew by 14.3 percent, rising from 663 GWh in March 2024 to 758 GWh in March 2025.
In terms of fuel production, lignite output rose sharply to 615,000 tons in March 2025, marking a 29.2 percent increase compared to the same month last year. Brown coal production also increased by 8.1 percent, reaching 482,000 tons.
Natural gas imports totaled 24 million cubic meters in March 2025, a 13.4 percent rise from the 21.16 million cubic meters imported in March 2024, highlighting growing energy demands and increased diversification of energy sources in the country.
