Bulgaria: Electricity production rises 5.6% in 2025 as renewables surge and exports reach 1.36 TWh

According to data published by Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator ESO, total electricity production in 2025 increased by 5.62% year-on-year, reaching 40.11 TWh, reflecting a solid recovery in generation across the country.

Electricity consumption in Bulgaria also recorded growth, rising by 4.88% to a total of 38.76 TWh. As a result, Bulgaria maintained its position as a net exporter of power, with net electricity exports totaling 1.36 TWh during the year.

Baseload power plants, including coal- and nuclear-fired facilities, generated a combined 28.96 TWh of electricity, which is 1.76% more than in 2024, confirming the continued central role of conventional capacity in the national power mix.

At the same time, the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES) continued to rise sharply. Electricity produced from RES connected to the transmission network jumped by 19.6% to 3,980.7 GWh, while RES generation in the distribution network increased by 19.71% to 3,944.7 GWh, highlighting the rapid expansion of decentralized renewable capacity across Bulgaria.
