Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov has expressed confidence that potential U.S. tariffs will not affect the budget for constructing Units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant.
Responding to media inquiries, Minister Stankov stated that he does not foresee any import duties or tariffs being imposed on the nuclear reactors—either by the United States or the European Union. He stressed that the project is expected to proceed with robust financial support from U.S. export credit agencies, alongside backing from South Korea.
Stankov also highlighted Bulgaria’s strategic choice of the AP1000 reactor technology, developed by U.S.-based Westinghouse, noting that this decision significantly reduces Bulgaria’s exposure to project risk. According to the minister, much of the responsibility for delivering systems and equipment now lies with the contracted suppliers.
The Kozloduy expansion is a key element of Bulgaria’s long-term energy strategy, aimed at enhancing energy security and transitioning to low-carbon power generation.
