Austrian renewable energy company RP Global has launched construction of a 21 MW solar power plant in Novalja, located on the Croatian island of Pag. This project marks the company’s first foray into solar energy in Croatia, building on its earlier investments in wind farms in Danilo (Šibenik hinterland) and Rudine (Dubrovnik area).
The Novalja solar facility is expected to contribute approximately €50,000 annually to the local municipality’s budget. To support the project, local authorities swiftly approved a financing agreement and adopted amendments to the Spatial Plan of the Lika-Senj County. These changes significantly expand solar development opportunities by allowing photovoltaic panels to occupy up to 50% of a building plot—double the previous 25% cap.
The project is part of RP Global’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy operations in the Lika-Senj region. The company sees the area as key to its long-term plans in Croatia’s green energy sector.
According to the Croatian energy market operator HROTE, solar power plants generated more than 72 million kWh of electricity last year. Renewable electricity production as a whole grew by 16.1% year-on-year, with solar contributing 6% of the country’s total installed capacity.
