Croatia’s Trtar-Krtolin wind farm plans 30 MW repowering and battery storage

Croatia’s Trtar-Krtolin wind farm is preparing a repowering project that would raise its installed capacity from 11.2 MW to 30 MW. The plans also include battery energy storage.

The project would replace 14 Enercon E-48 turbines, each rated at 800 kW, with five turbines rated at 6 MW each. It also predusmatries four battery units with combined storage capacity of 10 MW/20 MWh. The storage is intended to help manage intermittent generation and enable more flexible participation in the electricity market.

Project development and implementation

Located near Sibenik, the wind farm has operated since 2006 and was Croatia’s second wind farm. The project is being developed by Vjetroelektrana Trtar-Krtolin, a subsidiary of German renewable energy developer wpd.

Reconstruction is expected to proceed in stages, with work including new turbine foundations, electrical connections and communications infrastructure. Once completed, the project would almost triple the site’s installed generating capacity while continuing to use much of its established grid and energy infrastructure.
