Hungary: HUDEX to cease all electricity and gas trading due to low market liquidity

HUDEX has announced that it will cease all electricity and natural gas trading after concluding that market liquidity remains insufficient to support sustainable long-term operations. Despite extensive efforts and detailed assessments conducted in recent years, trading volumes failed to reach the levels required to meet regulatory standards. As a result, the company’s board has approved the closure of all market segments.

The delisting of products and contracts will be carried out in several stages, beginning with those that have no open positions. The company’s CEO has issued a resolution to update the official product lists and technical specifications for both the electricity and natural gas trading platforms. Trading calendars for each segment have also been revised to include only active contracts.

Effective immediately, the affected contracts and products are suspended from trading and will be formally delisted at 8:00 AM on 6 October 2025. Additionally, monthly and quarterly electricity contracts subject to cascading that have no open interest after 1 January 2026 will also be suspended. These contracts will only reopen when cascading is scheduled to occur.

To reflect these operational changes, HUDEX has amended its Settlement Price Regulation, with the updated version set to take effect on 8 October 2025.
