North Macedonia puts modernized Bitola–Prilep power line into trial operation

A key electricity transmission link in North Macedonia has been fully modernized and returned to service following the completion of reconstruction works at the end of 2025. The upgraded 110 kV transmission line, which had been in operation for more than five decades, has now been successfully energized and has entered trial operation, marking a major milestone for the country’s power network.

The project covered the line connecting the Bitola 1 and Prilep 1 substations and was implemented along the existing route. All reinforced concrete towers dating back over 50 years were dismantled and replaced with a new system supported by steel lattice pylons, delivering a substantial upgrade in both reliability and structural integrity.

The newly built line stretches for 33.5 kilometers and is supported by 125 steel towers. In parallel with the structural replacement, the entire electrical system was renewed, including new phase conductors, ground wires, insulators and auxiliary equipment, significantly improving electrical performance and mechanical resilience.

According to transmission system operator MEPSO, the increased transmission capacity directly enhances the safety, stability and operational flexibility of the national grid. The modernized corridor is expected to play a key role in boosting system reliability and supporting future growth in electricity demand.

The reconstruction formed part of Lot 1 of MEPSO’s broader grid investment program and was financed through a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Construction, electrical installation and engineering works were carried out between 2023 and 2025 by a consortium led by Croatian company Dalekovod, which delivered the project in line with contractual and technical standards.

Following final inspections and successful testing, the line was energized and placed into trial operation. MEPSO said the project is part of its ongoing effort to systematically upgrade and reinforce North Macedonia’s transmission infrastructure, strengthening the security of electricity supply while increasing the overall capacity and robustness of the national power system.
