Romania’s electricity and heat generation is expected to see a gradual increase in the coming years, with modest growth projected for 2026 and steady gains extending through 2029, according to the autumn edition of the National Strategy and Forecast Commission’s outlook for 2025–2029.
The Commission forecasts that energy production and supply will rise by 0.8% in 2026 compared to 2025, followed by stronger growth of 2% in 2027. The upward trend is expected to continue in 2028 with a 2.3% increase, before moderating to 1.5% in 2029.
The industrial sector is also anticipated to expand. Overall industrial output is projected to grow by 0.5% in 2026, accelerate to 1.6% in 2027, reach 2.2% in 2028, and then ease slightly to 1.9% in 2029.
In contrast, the extractive industries are expected to experience a 1.4% contraction in 2026, with production rebounding in subsequent years. Growth is forecast at 0.7% in 2027, rising to 1.4% in 2028, before slowing to 1.1% in 2029, reflecting a gradual recovery in this sector.
