SANY acquires 153 MW standalone battery project in Romania as €1 billion plan expands

Chinese industrial group SANY has acquired a 153 MW standalone battery storage project at Borzești, Romania, adding to its planned investment in the country’s renewable energy and storage market. The project was acquired from RNV Infrastructure, part of Renovatio Group, through the purchase of all shares in project company Spark Terminal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal is SANY’s first announced standalone battery project in Romania. Its development pipeline also includes hybrid renewable energy and storage projects. SANY entered the Romanian energy market earlier in 2026.

The company has identified Romania as a priority investment destination, with plans for total spending of around €1 billion on renewable energy and storage. Its first Romanian development is in Dobrești in Dolj county, where it plans to build a 95 MW solar plant alongside 218 MWh of battery storage. The project is ready to move into construction.

Standalone storage adds to SANY’s Romanian portfolio

The Borzești acquisition extends SANY’s strategy beyond batteries directly associated with renewable generation. Standalone storage can charge electricity from the wider grid rather than from a single solar or wind facility. This allows the asset to respond directly to wholesale prices, grid congestion and balancing requirements.

The distinction could become more important in Romania, where the rapid expansion of variable renewable generation is increasing the value of flexible capacity. The acquisition gives SANY another route into the Romanian electricity market. For Romania, it is another indication that storage development is moving from a supporting component of renewable projects towards a distinct investment class with its own trading and balancing revenue potential.
