Serbia appoints Transportgas Srbija as national gas transmission operator, advancing sector reform

Serbia has taken another institutional step in restructuring its gas sector by formally designating a company to oversee and manage the country’s natural gas transmission system. The government confirmed the move at its most recent session, finalizing a process that has been ongoing for more than a year.

Transportgas Srbija has been named the national transmission system operator, tasked with administering network access and ensuring the proper functioning of the gas market. The appointment follows the company’s certification as an independent operator, a procedure completed last spring and endorsed by the Energy Community.

The certification marked a milestone in Serbia’s alignment with European energy rules, particularly within the framework of the national Reform Agenda. Authorities previously noted that gas sector restructuring was progressing alongside electricity sector reforms, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.

Further changes were introduced late last year with the creation of Gas Infrastruktura, a new entity that took ownership of the physical gas infrastructure, separating asset ownership from commercial activities. Under the revised model, Srbijagas continues to manage gas supply, while infrastructure management and market regulation are handled by specialized, independent companies.

Together, these measures complete a key phase of Serbia’s gas market overhaul, aimed at meeting international obligations, strengthening regulatory independence, and bringing the sector closer to European standards.
