One of Serbia’s largest solar projects is moving from planning to implementation, as contracts signed in early 2026 have paved the way for construction near Sremska Mitrovica. The Noćaj 1 project has formally entered its build-out stage following the conclusion of a comprehensive EPC agreement.
Turkish company Kontrolmatik has been selected to design, supply and build the 90 MW solar facility for investor Fortis Renewable Energy. The contract also includes the installation of an on-site battery energy storage system with a capacity of 36 MWh, marking a significant advancement for energy storage in Serbia.
Energy storage is central to the project’s design. The battery system will be delivered and implemented by Pomega Enerji Depolama Teknoloji, a specialist storage company within the Kontrolmatik Group, enabling the Nocaj 1 facility to contribute to grid flexibility and stability.
Noćaj 1 is part of Fortis Energy’s broader solar expansion strategy in Serbia, with a pipeline totaling around 270 MW. This includes the planned Noćaj 2 facility and follows Fortis’s mid-2024 acquisition of a 180 MW solar project in the same region, already paired with large-scale battery storage. Combined, these initiatives are expected to rank among the largest solar and storage investments in southeastern Europe.
Local authorities have emphasized the project’s scale, noting that the Macva area solar development will span hundreds of hectares of privately owned land and could ultimately reach capacities comparable to a significant portion of Serbia’s hydropower assets. Construction permits for parts of the complex were secured in advance, allowing works to proceed without regulatory delays.
Fortis Energy continues to expand its renewable footprint in Serbia, recently finalizing a network connection agreement for the 110 MW Erdevik solar project in the neighboring municipality of Sid, which will also include battery storage. In parallel, the company is advancing three wind projects with a combined capacity of nearly 500 MW and operates several biogas plants, reinforcing its position as a diversified renewable energy investor in the Serbian market.
