Solar output rises while wind generation falls across key European markets

In the week of September 21, solar photovoltaic generation increased across most of Europe’s major electricity markets compared with the previous week. Germany recorded the strongest growth, with output rising by 18%, followed by France at 5.9% and Italy at 3.9%. Spain posted a more modest 0.9% increase, while Portugal saw solar generation fall by 4.9%, its second consecutive weekly decline.

The same week also saw a reversal of recent trends in the four markets that increased. Germany, France, Italy and Spain all reversed the declines recorded over the previous two weeks. For the week of September 28, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects solar generation to rise in Italy but forecast declines in Germany and Spain. The outlooks indicate continued variation in solar production as seasonal conditions change.

Wind generation shifts across Europe in late September

During the fourth week of September, wind generation moved in the opposite direction, declining in most major European electricity markets compared with the previous week. Portugal recorded the largest decrease at 54%, followed by Germany with a 36% decline. Wind generation fell by 30% in France and 27% in Spain, with all four markets reversing increases from the previous week.

Italy was an exception, with wind generation surging by 68% after declining during the previous week. For the week of September 28, AleaSoft forecasts further increases in wind generation in France, Portugal and Spain. In contrast, wind output is expected to decline in Germany and Italy.

AleaSoft reports that movements in solar and wind generation underline volatility in renewable electricity output across Europe. It also points to changes in weather conditions and seasonal patterns as factors influencing renewable generation and electricity market dynamics in the coming weeks.
