Bulgaria: Kozloduy NPP Unit 6 taken offline early for preventive maintenance after leak detection

Unit 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant was taken offline on 17 July, to carry out planned maintenance after operators identified a leak in the heat-carrier circuit of its third steam generator. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard both the operational integrity of the unit and ensure dependable electricity delivery throughout the peak of the summer season.

Continuous checks have confirmed that all monitored parameters remain well below the thresholds set out in the plant’s technological guidelines. At no point did the values come close to the established safety limits, and there has been no impact on radiation levels either inside the facility or anywhere on the Kozloduy site.

Originally, it was planned for Unit 6 to be taken offline at the end of this week, on 19 July. However, the schedule was adjusted due to the detected leak. Maintenance work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

This event follows a series of preventive halts for Unit 6 in recent years. The unit was taken offline for routine overhauls in December 2022 and April 2023. It was also temporarily shut down in the summer of 2024 to address issues in the transformer oil system and to examine early signs of heat-carrier seepage in the steam generator.
