Albania’s state-owned energy company, KESH, has signed a cooperation agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD) for a technical assistance grant valued at €800,000. This grant aims to support operational improvements and enhance oversight of the three major hydropower plants along the Drin River.
Through this partnership, AFD will deliver specialized technical expertise to advance the digital modernization of water flow and reservoir management across the Drin cascade. The initiative seeks to optimize electricity production, reduce flood risks, and improve the overall efficiency of the system.
This modernization effort is part of a broader national strategy to lower carbon emissions within Albania’s energy sector.
The Drin River cascade includes the Fierza, Koman, and Vau i Dejes hydropower plants, which together have a total installed capacity of 1,350 megawatts.
