Week of September 14: demand up in Belgium, Germany and Portugal
During the week of September 14, electricity demand rose in Belgium, Germany and Portugal compared with the previous week. Belgium posted the strongest increase, with demand up 1.5% after two consecutive weeks of declines. Germany followed with a 1.4% increase, extending its growth streak to four consecutive weeks. Portugal recorded a 1.0% rise for the third week in a row.
Southern markets see declines while Italy drops most
Demand fell in Italy, Spain, Great Britain and France over the same week. Italy recorded the steepest decrease at 7.3%. Demand in both Spain and Great Britain declined by 4.0%. France saw a more moderate drop of 1.0%, and Italy, Spain and France each recorded lower demand for a second consecutive week.
Temperature changes accompany the demand shift
Average temperatures declined across Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and France during the week of September 14. Italy experienced the largest temperature fall, down 1.8°C. Spain followed with a decrease of 1.3°C, while Portugal fell by 1.2°C. Germany and France recorded smaller declines of 0.4°C and 0.2°C, respectively.
In contrast, average temperatures increased by 0.5°C in both Great Britain and Belgium during the same period.
Outlook from September 21: Portugal higher, multiple markets lower
For the week beginning September 21, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity demand to increase in Portugal. The forecast also calls for demand to decline in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Spain. AleaSoft reports that the outlook indicates continued divergence in electricity consumption trends across major European markets.
